Agentic Advertising Readiness: A Practical 2026 Checklist

A practical business and technical checklist for evaluating agent-assisted media buying in light of 2026 IAB Tech Lab AAMP and OpenProposal developments.

Illustrated step-by-step diagram for guides agentic advertising readiness

Updated 16 October 2026. AI-assisted advertising is moving beyond automated bidding towards agents that can help plan, compare and coordinate work. The IAB Tech Lab announced AAMP 3.0 / OpenProposal on 22 September 2026, describing standardised exchanges from a request for proposal through proposal comparison and towards buying commitments. Its public comment period runs to 22 October 2026. This is developing infrastructure, not evidence that every advertising platform supports the same capabilities.

1. Define who can make which decisions

Document the advertiser, agency, technology suppliers and approvers. Decide what an agent may recommend, what requires sign-off, and whether it can actually commit spend. Default to human approval for material financial changes.

2. Start with a measurable brief

Record the commercial objective, intended audience, market, budget, flight dates, attribution assumptions and prohibited contexts. Write an example of a good proposal and an unacceptable one. Preserve the original request and all revisions for audit.

3. Separate discovery, planning and execution

Research, proposal comparison and committed purchases require different permissions. Check the specification and real vendor support before integrating anything. A static website or browser calculator is not a live ad-buying API.

4. Require transparent proposal comparisons

Ask for comparable cost bases, inventory context, projected reach or outcomes, measurement method, fees, exclusions, privacy implications and known conflicts. Treat projections as hypotheses, not guarantees.

5. Design privacy and brand-safety controls

Specify permitted personal data, retention, approved vendors, contractual controls, brand-safety exclusions and a process for reporting mistakes. Review applicable privacy and advertising rules and do not assume model-generated assurances meet them.

6. Pilot with an audit trail

Test representative media plans, edge cases, contradictory briefs, authorisation failures, and misleading performance claims. Log approvals, versioned proposals and changes. Include a stop control and a manual fallback.

Useful measurement before agentic buying

Estimate campaign assumptions with UTM tracking conventions, evaluate business investments using the ROI calculator, and consider whether a specific automation would create net operating value. These are planning aids, not media-buying services.
