AI Search Discoverability: A Publisher and Business Checklist
A 2026 checklist for helping search engines and AI-assisted research services understand original content, products, tools and expertise.
Updated 16 October 2026. AI-generated search answers are changing how readers discover publishers, experts and digital products. Google's Search Central guidance says that established Search requirements, indexable text, helpful original content and accurate structured data still matter. It does not specify a special llms.txt requirement for appearing in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
1. Check the foundation
Make important public pages accessible to crawlers, keep links navigable in HTML, use correct HTTP success responses, publish an XML sitemap, and confirm canonical destinations. Check crawl and indexing status in Search Console instead of assuming a submitted sitemap guarantees inclusion.
2. Make expertise verifiable
Describe services, professional identity, project contexts, publication dates and practical limitations clearly. Cite primary sources for changing industry statements. Present older work as historical experience; do not invent outcomes, endorsements or team members.
3. Publish information that answers real questions
Provide specific examples, explanations, comparisons, templates, use cases and limitations. Make the page useful even when someone never becomes a client. Avoid producing many near-identical keyword pages solely to increase coverage.
4. Make browser tools understandable
For each free utility, show its purpose, expected input format, validation rules, examples, output format and privacy constraints. Explain clearly when processing happens locally. Do not advertise a JavaScript form as a callable API.
5. Treat structured data as a description, not a trick
Use suitable Schema.org types where they describe visible page information accurately. Test JSON-LD syntax and whether values match what people can actually read. No markup guarantees a rich result or inclusion in an AI answer.
6. Measure useful outcomes
In Search Console, compare indexed pages, search queries, impressions and clicks over time. Pair this with legitimate, privacy-aware analytics and genuinely useful outcomes such as enquiries or tool engagement. Avoid claims of AI-search traffic growth without evidence.
Practical starting points
Use the structured data starter, sitemap generator, contrast checker and project checklist. Review generated material before publishing.
