Research reviewed: 18 October 2026. Advertising products and legal guidance change quickly; confirm platform settings and legal duties before acting. This guide is a practical review, not legal advice, investment advice or a promise of advertising results.
1. Map how campaigns choose their audience and message
Google Ads describes AI Max for Search as a combination of search term matching, text customisation and optional final URL expansion. Its help documentation says campaigns using the legacy automatically created assets feature began upgrading to AI Max from September 2026. Review your account's actual settings rather than assuming a feature is enabled or unavailable.
Document keywords, audience intent, brand boundaries, creative approvals and the pages each campaign is permitted to promote. Keep a record of what automation is allowed to change.
2. Check generated adverts against real landing-page claims
Google states that text customisation uses existing ads and landing-page information to generate new headline and description assets. The practical consequence: inaccurate offer details or outdated website copy can affect generated messages. Keep price, eligibility, location, availability and claims accurate and review asset-level reporting.
Be especially careful with regulated categories and commercial promises. AI-generated copy should not be treated as approved simply because a platform produced it.
3. Govern final URL expansion
AI Max can direct an eligible click to a different relevant landing page from the same domain. Review exclusion and inclusion controls so visitors do not land on outdated campaigns, policy pages or content that cannot fulfil the advertised offer. Google documents that pinned responsive-search-ad assets may not be respected when certain expansion features are active.
4. Establish a decision-worthy measurement plan
Decide what counts as a meaningful result: a qualified enquiry, a confirmed sale, a booking or another verifiable customer action. Distinguish platform-attributed conversions from independently verified business outcomes. Keep source and medium names consistent; use the UTM builder for a tracking convention and the campaign economics planner for illustrative scenarios.
Do not add customer identifiers or private information to publicly shareable tracking links. Record assumptions, tracking gaps and attribution limitations.
5. Treat privacy as part of campaign design
On 29 April 2026, the UK Information Commissioner's Office published final guidance on storage and access technologies, addressing cookies and related tracking. The rules and any applicable exceptions depend on the technology and purpose. A marketer should document tags, purposes, notices, lawful handling and consent or applicable exemptions before deployment. Seek qualified legal review for UK-specific obligations.
For DigitalFishing, existing Google Analytics code is preserved verbatim as required by the site's owner; this preservation is not a legal conclusion that its deployment meets every requirement. A compliance review remains an explicit action item.
6. Run a limited experiment before scaling
Agree one question, a baseline and a defined evaluation period. Use experiment features where supported to compare automation against a meaningful control. Track not only clicks or platform-reported conversions but lead quality, costs, landing-page suitability and unintended brand or compliance issues.
7. Put the next actions in writing
For each campaign: name an owner, document changed settings, keep a list of acceptable URLs, define the conversion and attribution source, set review dates, and establish a process for pausing incorrect or harmful creatives.
